The Jaya Sri Maha Bodhi is the oldest human-planted tree in the world with a known planting date, over 2,250 years old. Constructed by King Devanampiya Tissa in the 3rd century BCE immediately after the arrival of Mahinda Thero, Thuparamaya is the first Buddhist temple built in Sri Lanka. It enshrines the sacred right collarbone relic of the Buddha.

The stupa is encircled by concentric rings of slender, gracefully carved granite pillars. These pillars originally supported a wooden *Vatadage*—a unique circular roofed shrine structure distinct to ancient Sri Lankan temple engineering.

Located between Ruwanwelisaya and the Jaya Sri Maha Bodhi, Lovamahapaya was originally constructed by King Dutugemunu 2,000 years ago as a grand 9-story chapter house for monks.

Its roof was covered with copper-bronze tiles, giving it the name "Brazen Palace". Though the wooden upper floors vanished over centuries, visitors today can marvel at the impressive grid of 1,600 massive standing stone pillars that supported the structure.
