The Last Royal Stronghold

Set around a picturesque artificial lake ringed by tropical mountain ridges, Kandy (Senkadagala) was founded in the 14th century and became the final independent kingdom of Sri Lanka. It successfully resisted Portuguese and Dutch colonial forces for over two centuries before falling to the British in 1815.

As the custodian of the Sacred Tooth Relic of Gautama Buddha, Kandy remains the spiritual epicenter of Sri Lankan Buddhism and a living capital of traditional dance, drumming, and craftsmanship.

Situated inside the former royal palace complex, Sri Dalada Maligawa houses the left canine tooth of Lord Buddha. The tooth relic has played an essential role in local politics since ancient times—whoever holds the relic holds the divine right to govern the nation.

Visitors witness traditional daily Thewawa worship ceremonies accompanied by traditional drumming, trumpet blowing, and lotus flower offerings.

The Magul Maduwa is an open wooden hall where Kandyan kings held royal court and signed state treaties. Built in 1783, its steep hipped roof is supported by 64 intricate, hand-carved halmilla wood pillars adorned with lotus flowers and mythical lions.

The adjacent Royal Palace complex now houses the National Museum of Kandy and the International Buddhist Museum.
