After the fall of Anuradhapura in 1070 CE, King Vijayabahu I established Polonnaruwa as the capital. Under King Parakramabahu the Great and King Nissankamalla, it transformed into a sprawling metropolis of opulent palaces, landscaped pleasure gardens, and genius irrigation networks.

Unlike earlier wooden architecture, Polonnaruwa’s granite and brick monuments were built to endure eternity. Today, visitors can cycle through shaded parklands filled with active ruins and playful toque macaque monkeys.

Gal Vihara is widely recognized as the pinnacle of ancient Sri Lankan stone sculpture. Carved directly into a single massive granite face by King Parakramabahu I, this rock shrine features four colossal Buddha statues: a seated Buddha in deep meditation, a standing figure with folded arms, and a 14-meter reclining Buddha depicting Parinirvana.

The intricate details—from the delicate natural folds of robes to the subtle peaceful facial expressions—show unparalleled artistic mastery.

The Sacred Quadrangle (Dalada Maligawa complex) was the spiritual heart of ancient Polonnaruwa, built to protect the sacred Tooth Relic. Its crown jewel is the Vatadage—a magnificent circular stone structure with two concentric terraces, ornate moonstones, and four sitting Buddhas guarding the central stupa.

Nearby monuments inside the Quadrangle include the Hatadage, Atadage, and the mysterious 7-tiered step pyramid named Satmahal Prasada.

Historical chronicles describe this imperial palace as a 7-story citadel with 1,000 rooms supported by massive timber beams and granite pillars. Known as Vijayanta Pasada (Palace of the Gods), its thick brick walls still stand 3 stories tall today, giving a glimpse of royal splendor.

Adjoining the palace is the Royal Audience Hall with stone lions guarding the staircase and carved elephant friezes depicting distinct postures along its base.
